Better Ways to Connect

Building a Platform for People, not Profit

These days, just because we’re online doesn’t mean we’re connected.

In fact, looking around today, sometimes it seems like the more time we spend online, the easier it is to feel disconnected from the world we live in.

This need not be the case. With just a shift in focus and design, our phones and computers could be employed to bring us closer together in a very real sense. Technology can facilitate deeper connection, by giving us action-focused avenues into being more a part of, rather than apart from, our world.

The solutions are simple. Minor adjustments to already available technology will turn our phones and computers into a dynamic set of tools for connecting, organizing, and acting.

Enter Beacon, the social network designed expressly for the purpose of empowering communities and facilitating connection. Beacon’s emphasis is on networking, expanding the essential web utility of many social media platforms while keeping the focus on utility, not media.

The power of the internet to facilitate meaningful, useful connection is unlimited. However, major platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have shifted from this purpose. Focused on monetization, these platforms privilege media that keeps users engaged with their devices over meaningful connection that engages them with their communities.

As a result, our phones too often become nothing more than personalized pocket TVs, commercials and all.

The people need a place to connect that is free from financial interests. If we are to tap the full potential of the internet as a network, the emphasis must be put on connection and action.

We can reclaim the network and set aside the media. This is the intention of Beacon: to be a social networking tool that empowers users to connect. Beacon prioritizes community through its triple focus on awareness, organization, and action. It is this focus that informs our platform development and design.

We believe that a connected individual is an empowered individual, and that such folks make for the strongest possible communities. When we are more aware of our world and the ways we can fit into it, and we have the tools and channels available to communicate and organize, that’s when we are most able to make a difference.

It’s time for our smartphones to live up to their name, and for the internet to live up to its full potential. Join us in creating a platform tailor-made to the needs of the people, designed specifically to empower and connect.
